Wild Things: Faith Under Pressure

Jun 14, 2026    Chad Wilson

We live in a world that feels wild on every front. The economy, politics, relationships, and even our internal struggles can leave us feeling untamed and unsettled. This message from James chapter 1 confronts a fundamental truth: trials don't create our faith, they reveal it. Just as squeezing an orange produces orange juice, the pressure we face shows what's truly inside us. The early church faced persecution from both Romans and Jews, yet James wrote to them with a startling command: count it all joy when troubles come. This isn't toxic positivity or denial of pain. It's an invitation to see that pressure reveals what success often hides. When we're comfortable, our pride, control issues, and self-reliance can masquerade as strength. But when we're squeezed, we discover whether we're truly depending on Jesus or just using Him as an accessory to our self-made lives. The wilderness around us doesn't have to create chaos within us. Through prayer, worship, and scripture, we can persevere through any suffering. The question isn't why is this happening to me, but what is God doing in me through this. If we don't quit, we win. God started a good work in us, and He will complete it. Our struggles are invitations to wisdom, to closeness with God, and to becoming who we were always meant to be.
