Disciple is a Verb

What does it actually mean to follow Jesus? Not just believe in him, not just agree with his teachings, but truly follow him? This message cuts straight to the heart of that question by unpacking one of the most important words in the Christian faith: disciple. We often settle for a comfortable, low-commitment version of faith, one where we check the right boxes, know the right answers, and feel secure in our beliefs. But Jesus never extended an invitation to simply believe in him from a safe distance. His call was always 'come follow me,' and those words demand movement, reorientation, and action. Drawing from Matthew 4 and the moment Jesus calls Peter and Andrew away from their nets, we are reminded that genuine discipleship means rearranging our entire lives around Jesus, not just making room for him somewhere in the margins. The rich young ruler in Matthew 19 gives us a sobering mirror to look into, showing us what it looks like when the cost of following feels too high. His story challenges us to ask ourselves what we might be holding onto that is keeping us from going all in. The adventure of discipleship is costly, but the reward on the other side of surrender is a depth of relationship with Jesus that a comfortable, half-committed faith could never produce.
