The Sower

What if the condition of your heart determined everything about how God's word takes root in your life? That is exactly the question at the center of Jesus's Parable of the Sower, and it is one worth sitting with. Drawing from Matthew 13, we explore four types of soil -- the hardened footpath, the shallow rocky ground, the thorn-choked earth, and the rich fertile soil -- each representing a different posture of the heart toward the gospel. The striking detail is that the seed never changes. The word of God is just as powerful and alive whether it lands on closed, distracted, or open hearts. What changes is us. This message challenges us to honestly examine what kind of soil we are right now, not as a judgment, but as an invitation. Are we hearing God's word but letting it get snatched away before it settles? Are we excited in the moment but without the roots to endure hardship? Are we so crowded with worry, ambition, politics, and distraction that the message gets choked out before it can produce anything? Or are we genuinely receiving, understanding, and bearing fruit? The call here is not to passive listening but to active, accountable hearing -- the kind the Hebrew concept of shema describes, where to hear something means to do it. This is a message about the condition of the soil of our souls, and the good news is that soil can be changed.
